Red States and Blue States

Please watch this short video from Stanford University about the geography of US elections.  Then write a short response to the following question:

Oregon has been considered a "blue state" for the last few decades.  Imagine that you are a Republican living in Oregon.  Do you believe that your vote counts in a Presidential election?  Will you still choose to vote?  Why or why not?

  1. Of course I'll still vote Mr. Frenzel! After all, you have drilled it into our heads how important it is. But, if I was a rural Republican in Oregon, I would feel mighty disenfranchised. It seems that there are enough Liberals in Portland to counteract any vote I make. I think it is lame that one or two major population centers can control the whole state the way they do. I mean, what do those latte drinking Portlanders know about life in Burns? we don't have jobs, and the ones that are left are not compatible with Portland's vision of Oregon. I don't think it's fair, but I would still vote so that I can maintain my right to complain!

  2. If I were a Republican living in Oregon I think that I would still choose to vote for similar reasons that Todd mentioned: I would still have my right to complain. I think expressing your personal political opinion is important - and you never really know how others will vote until they do. There is always a chance that my candidate will win!
